Creative Ways to Reach Your Audience
Sometimes, the best marketing ideas aren’t the ones you’ll find in a course or a textbook-they’re the ones you stumble across in daily life.
This week, I came across two fantastic examples of marketing outside the usual playbook.
Let me share them with you.
The first example comes from a local Pet Hotel.
Their genius idea?
They gave branded dog bowls to all the local cafes. Imagine grabbing a coffee, sitting outside with your dog, and noticing the bowl keeping Fido hydrated is stamped with the name, logo, and contact details of the Pet Hotel.
It’s functional, non-intrusive, and perfectly targeted a win-win for everyone.
While I was having my coffee, three people took the details from the bowls.
The second example happened just yesterday.
I was catching up with a friend over coffee when he pulled out his phone and said, “Watch this.”
My friend, a real estate agent (don’t hold it against him-he bought the coffee), opened an app called Kommo. In seconds, he segmented a list of 92 people, crafted a short message about a new property he’d just listed, and sent it via WhatsApp.
By the time we’d finished our coffee, he had 18 replies showing interest and only two unsubscribes.
Instant results from a simple, highly targeted approach.
What Does This Have to Do With Writing?
A lot.
The takeaway here is clear, think creatively about how you can target your ideal audience.
Whether it’s a branded dog bowl or a laser-focused WhatsApp message, the goal is the same connect with the right people in a way that makes sense for them.
You’ve probably seen this image before,
This email was sent to just 82 people with a specific offer tailored for them.
The result? A 42% conversion rate.
It was so effective, one person accidentally bought twice (don’t worry, I refunded them).
How Can You Apply This?
Think about ways to break away from the pack.
Everyone is competing for attention, but not everyone is willing to take a step back and ask:
“How can I truly connect with the people I want to reach?”
This is where tools like Substack can shine.
With the right strategy, you can create highly targeted campaigns that feel personal, helpful, and actionable. In fact, in my latest newsletter, I outlined exactly how to replicate this on Substack.

So, whether it’s dog bowls or WhatsApp, let these examples inspire you to carve out your own creative marketing ideas.
The tools are out there- t’s just a matter of how you use them.
