Marketers, Why You Need A Story

I was doing research into some companies and how they went from zero to well-known in record time and I read about Cards Against Humanity.

One thing that jumped out at me while reading up about them was a quote by one of the creators.

I knew from the beginning that we’d be relying on earned media to get the word out about our game, which meant we needed to have a compelling story. “Some guys are selling a game” is a boring story, but a Kickstarter project is very exciting. Project creators on Kickstarter are underdogs who are trying to make their own thing against all odds while the clock ticks down. That’s a great story.

Do me a favour and read that again.

Now commit to memory the bit about needing to have a story.

Then apply that to every aspect of your business.

You Need a Story

Marketers and companies get this wrong all the time

“Lose 10lbs in 21 days” isn’t a story.

“How to get your ex back” isn’t a story.

“How to get more subscribers” isn’t a story.

“Learn how I lost 10lbs in 3 weeks and won my husband back” is a story.

“7 ways you can get your ex back and live happily every after” is a story.
