It’s impossible not to build on rented land

I regularly hear people say… “Don’t build on rented land” meaning don’t create your business on stuff you don’t own.

In fact, I’ve said it myself, but it’s total bs. It’s the type of thing we say without actually thinking about it. If you take a few minutes to think about it, you’ll see just how ridiculous it is.

Do you own a hosting company, the servers or a domain registrar?

Nope didn’t think you did! So let's look at this logically, and lets take Medium for an example. I am writing my content here. The alternative is my own blog.

If I write on my own blog, It’s likely that I’ll use WordPress. Could WordPress stop updating tomorrow?

Yes

Could my hosting company stop hosting tomorrow?

Yes

Could Amazon AWS take down their servers tomorrow?

Yes

The point is that no matter where you build your presence, it could all come crashing down tomorrow.
